Whittle, Thomas Levi (May 21, 1812 – Jul 3, 1868) by Thomas Wheatley
From the Ancestral File Record we know that Thomas Levi Whittle was
born May 21, 1812 in Mersea Township, Essex, Ontario, Canada.
Thomas had 16 siblings. It is unknown, however, how many lived to
adulthood. The record shows death dates for only three of Thomas'
siblings. The rest are unknown.
Thomas married Mary Amelia (Polly) Fullmer in 1833 at age 21 in
Canada. Thomas and Mary had nine children. Three of the
children were born in Nauvoo, Hancock, Illinois: George (Page) born
June 10 1840, Zera (Zerah) born March 21, 1843, and Emmeline born March
7, 1845. If the family lived in Nauvoo during the entire period
between the births, they surely would have seen many key events take
place concerning the development of the Church.
Thomas later married Mary Jane Butterfield August 7, 1853 in Salt Lake City, Utah. To this union were born five children.
The Whittle family is listed in two different companies that came to
the Rocky Mountains. Both companies left at almost the same time and
arrived at near the same time. The two companies were directed by
Brigham Young and Heber C. Kimball. Brigham's company left June 5, 1848
and arrived between the 20th and 24th of September 1848. Heber's
company left June 7, 1848 and arrived the 24th of September 1848.
The records mention Thomas Levi as 35-36 years old and Thomas's wife Mary Amelia Fullmer as 31-35.
Of the Whittle children the records mention:
Emmeline: 3 years old
George 7-8 years old
John C. 13 years old
Mary E. 10 years old
Olive 14 years old
Zerah 5 years old
Thomas died July 3, 1868 at the age of 56 in Richmond, Cache,
Utah. Thomas' second wife, Mary Jane went on to live until 1915
to the age of 79.
