Reflections on College

As I look back on my experience at the
university, I have created a list of suggestions for someone about to
embark on the journey…

Things that I found helpful:

  • Getting married
  • Applying for scholarships
  • Working on a personal business
  • Working
through school.  From my point of view, working while you go to school
is a great way to apply what you learn.  Be strategic in the job you
choose.  There may be some "easy" campus jobs that you could take, but
choose a job related to your field.  Your studies will become more
interesting and your resume will so much the better because you’ll have
    relevant experience in your field.
  • Getting involved in student leadership
  • Reading books outside of class related to the field
  • Reading books outside of class not related specifically to any of my fields of study
  • Taking a few classes outside my major and not necessarily required by the General Education Requirements.
  • Setting up a contact list of the people that I met
  • Selecting the "Most Stone Cold University in America" (Princeton Review) help remove
a lot of problems and distractions that other universities have to put
    up with.
  • Exploring new hobbies and talents.

Things I wish I would have done:

  • Exercised more
  • Eaten more healthy foods
  • Realized earlier that I could save lots of money by purchasing books online
  • Created
a main or intriguing ideas book – since you may end up throwing away
your notebooks from your classes, a book where you compile the main
ideas or the most interesting ideas from your classes would be useful
    to look back upon.
  • Kept a better contact list of the people that I came in contact
with with especially guest lecturers who invited us to contact them
with questions or for advice down the road of life.
  • Watched less television.  How much benefit did you get from
watching television?  Not much, yet we watched a lot of television.  I
remember one time when a roommate who had the television moved away.
We didn’t have a replacement for sometime.  We were amazed by how much
we were able to get done.  I think new roommate brought a television
and we were back to our old ways.
  • Served more in the community.  I don’t mean be active in the
community, because college students do fairly well at that, but I
could have served more in the community.
  • Attended more forums and symposiums especially when foreign dignitaries came to lecture.
  • Learned about all the resources made freely to the student body but
that you have to pay for when you’re graduated.  Many online journals
and other services are made free to students through the university.
  • Reached out more an friendshipped more people.
  • Finished that speed reading course!
  • Worked on improving my memory skills.
