Green, Etha Jane (Sep 12, 1905 – 25 Jan, 1978) by Her Husband
A TRIBUTE TO MY WIFE, ETHA JANE GREEN JOHN.
MOTHER.
BY G. GORDON JOHN.
Page-1-.
I will try and point out some of the out standing things, your Mother
Etha Jane Green John had in mind even in the early years of her life,
and she tried to accomplish them as she grew older, She [sic] was a
Church minded God fearing girl even in her younger years of life, and
as she grew older she was found working in the Ward, in the young
ladies and Mutual, And while working there she was very faithful in
attending the other meetings, Even [sic] once I had her at my home at
Woodruff, [sic] she insisted on going home for Church, She received
very little encouragement from home..She [sic] was the happiest when
she could see her children attending Church and doing the things that
were ask [sic] of them, She [sic] was happy when Norman was on his
Stake Mission, in the High Counsel and in the Bishoprick, [sic] and
other offices he held in the Church, and the same with her two girls
Beryl and Deaun, and to know they all married good companions, She
[sic] enjoyed her call as a Stake Missionary, and was faithful on her
mission. and [sic] Im [sic] sure she touched many hearts, and the three
years we served as Stake Tabernacle missionaries, she enjoyed very
much, and we even received a letter back from a couple in Michigan
telling how they enjoyed their visit, and for the kindness we showed
them, We [sic] are the happiest when we are doing the things our father
in heaven wants us to do…She [sic] said many times that when her
Father and Mother went to the Temple, and were sealed for time and
Eternity, that was one of the happiest moments in her life, and that
her and some of her brothers and sister were sealed to them..She [sic]
realized early in life that Temple marriage was a must and you had to
live every day of your life in preparing your self for the life after
death, when you could be together and enjoy the blessings that our
Father in Heaven has promised those [who] obey his comandments, [sic]
but life after death wouldent [sic] be complete with out [sic] our
children and their children and on.
December 31, 1984. As the old year comes to a end, and we have time to
think back on the things that have happened in our lives we recall many
things, some are pleasant memories and some are not so pleasant, but
life comes to us this way, we very seldom get what we would like as it
takes much hard work, some times [sic] sickness, sometimes even death,
but we must go on, as time never stops, Seven [sic] years today Mother
left our home, went to the BC.Hospital [sic] lived 25 days and was
called back to our Father in Heaven, where Im [sic] sure there was many
waiting with out-stretched arms to greet her, and Im [sic] sure our
Father in Heaven had work for her to do, much more important than what
she was doing while here on earth, She [sic] has been missed very much
by her children [sic] Grand children [sic] and Great Grand children, I
have missed her very much, through the seven years[,] she has been
missed by many others.
I have been permitted to stay here, I dont [sic] know for how long but
in these years I have put much of our Genealogy together, I have put
together about 6.000 [sic] sheets and have put them where our children
and posterity [sic] after them, this will help them, to find more of
our Kinfolk, [sic] and get the work done so that they too might be able
to enjoy the blessings that our Father in Heaven has for them, some has
[sic] probly [sic] been waiting many many years for this work to be
done. We each of us must do our own research and get acquanted
[sic] with our people so when we are called there we will know them, we
have been told each has to do his own, by doing this we will be able to
store this in our minds, and that knowledge we will take with us.
I have in the last 20 years, put together many records, and pray
our Father in Heaven will give me time to do much more that might be of
some help to others.

MOTHER
Etha Jane Green, was born 12th. of September 1905,
at Layton, Davis, Utah. the second child and oldest daughter of Chester
Warren and Ellenor Dunn Green, she [sic] had a brother Melvin older
than her self, she was born in a log house that was built by her
Grandfather, George William Green in 1871 the 3rd. son of George
William and Davinia Smith Forbes Green[.] Among those born in this old
log house was Etha her brother Melvin her father Chester Warren born in
1884, he was the 8th, child born to them, the first two children was
[sic] born in Enterprise, a few miles up Weber canyon, this is where
Etha's Great Grandmother settled with her children when she came here
from South-Africa, in 1863, Margaret left her husband John in
South-Africa to finish some business, he died there some years later,
and she died about the same time in Enterprise Utah, she brought all
her children but one, that stayed with her father and never came here.
Etha's Father moved to Thatcher, BoxElder, [sic]
Utah, shortly after Eths's [sic] birth, Etha was blessed at Bothwell a
town near by, she was blessed the 8th. [sic] December 1905 by William
Eli Hawkins, a short time later he moved to Garland where he worked for
the Utah & Idaho Sugar Company, while there another little girl was
was [sic] born Ellenor Ruth 9 April 1908, Etha remembers her and Melvin
helping her walk down the street to meet their father as he came from
work, Ellenor Ruth died 28 July 1909, she was burried [sic] at
Kaysville, Utah.
Im not sure about her father living on the East
Sugar Company farm, But [sic] he lived on the North Farm for some time
and moved to the Central Farm where he lived many years, In [sic] later
years he bought that farm and was there when Etha was married.
Etha went to School while living on the Central Farm. she [sic] went 2
years in the old schoolhouse, and finished the eigh't [sic] grade in
the new school house,in [sic] about 1919, there was a two year
High-School in Garland and Etha rode a horse to Garland to school until
the weather got bad, and boarded and helped with the house work at
Mr.Munns, [sic] and the second year she boarded at Knoth's they owned a
drug store in Garland, doing house work for her board. This was
before the Bear-River High School was built, so that was the last of
her schooling, Della Berchtold,a [sic] girl that graduated from the
8th. [sic] grade with her wanted Etha to go to Ogden, and take Nursing
but her father said she was too young so that was the end of that, Etha
[sic] would have made a good nurse, as she loved that kind of work,
from then on Etha helped her mother and helped others at threshing time
and when ever there was help wanted Etha was there, she was a hard
worker, she tells of working at Charles Barfuss when their 4th. and
5th. [sic] children were born, had to carry the water wash clothes on a
wash board cook for the family, take care of the mother and baby, wash
the dipers, [sic] there was no disposable dipers [sic] then, this she
done [sic] for 3 to 5 dollars a week, In [sic] later years she worked
for Mrs. Doctor White for $7.00 pr.week, [sic] she was there when I
started dateing [sic] her, I remember Mrs. White having [sic] us set
[sic] on a bench in her back yard, and she served us a drink, boy how I
wished I was out of there.
She apent [sic] her money buying things for her brothers and sisters,
especialy [sic] at Christmas, she was always thinking of others, and
would go without herself, in the winter the young folks from that
neighborhood all went to dances together, had a good time, to Thatcher,
Bothwell, Bear-River City, Elwood, Tremonton, Union and Evans, they all
went and had a good time..Owen [sic] said some time ago, when Etha came
out she always ask how the crops were, she seemed concerned, that made
me feel good, to know someone cared.
Page-3-.
MOTHER.
Etha and her Mother were very close, as Etha was the oldest daughter
she was a great help to her mother, her mother was very clean in her
house work, and Etha learned much the years she was home, she tells of
her mother makeing [sic] her scrub a floor over several times before it
was good enough.
When Etha and I got married, we went to SL. the 16th. Nov. 1926, we stayed at Higbee's friends of ours, went to the
Temple the next morning, the 17th. Nov.1926. [sic] my
Parents went with us, Etha [sic] and I stayed at the Wilson Hotel that
night, we went to a show first when we got back to the Hotel, Etha
wanted me to go down and get her a book to read as she was'nt [sic]
sleepy, I soon talked her out of that.
We went home the next day, we had a shower at Union where Etha's folks
lived, had a shower at Layton where her mother's folks lived, and one
at Woodruff, where my folks lived, we got many useful gifts which came
in handy, I moved a two room frame house on a piece of ground that I
had rented, from Vern Rhodes a very fine fellow, We dident [sic] have
much, I milked three cows, which [sic] gave usmilk [sic] Cream [sic] and
some to take to town to sell, We [sic] bought a few hens, that gave us
eggs and some we could take to the store and trade for groceries, fed a
pig or two which we killed salt brine curred, [sic] got our flour by
takeing [sic] our wheat to the flour Mill [sic] and traded it for flour
and germade [sic] for mush, our cream was the only cash item we had,
the eggs we traded at the store for groceries, we had a old Model T.
Ford, but dident [sic] run it much in the winter as there was'nt [sic]
agood [sic] antifreze, [sic] Alchol [sic] was the best but it
evaporated very fast, and the roads never plowed out, so we usely [sic]
put the car away for winter, [sic]
We lived there that winter, and by early apring [sic] we learned we
were going have a new arrive I at our home, we put our heads together
and bought our selves a small dresser, and a used New-home [sic] sewing
machine, I have the Sewing Machine in my bed room now, The [sic] wife
was very proud of the machine as she could make the baby clothes at
home, and hem about 3 dozen dipers, [sic] we only had a cook stove to
heat the two rooms, but they were happy times for us, I remember every
time we set down to eat I had to laugh as it seemed as tho [sic] we
were just playing house, the baby was born 14th. of Dec, 1927, we had
been married 13 months, the little mother was proud of that little boy,
you you [sic] could see her beam allover when she picked him up, I
think she probly [sic] spoiled him a little, we lived there three
years…We [sic] moved from there to a farm owned by a Mr.Crozier [sic]
the house was East of the 3rd. Ward church east of the railroad track
next to the canel, [sic] I farmed the ground where the church now
stands, While liveing [sic] there Dr. White built a Hospital in
Tremonton, we were living [sic] there when Beryl wasborn [sic] so she
was born in the new Hospital at Tremonton,I [sic] cant [sic] find a
young picture of Beryl and Deaun, if I find one a little older I will
use it later, I bought a tractor and a Thresher [sic] some other farm
machinery, did a lot of custom work, Alford helped me, The [sic]
depression hit while we lived there, wheat.25 [sic] cents pr. bu. [sic]
and it brought on hard times, we bought our coal by the sack, we got
our first radio while there….We [sic] moved up to mother's house
next, lived in two rooms Uncle John and aunt Annie had been living in,
We [sic] were there when Deaun was born, Dr.White [sic] said she would
have to be fed on Cows milk and brown Karo Syrup,I [sic] walked to town
many times for a gallon of Syrup, [sic] she was born in the Tremonton
Hospital.
Page-4-.
MOTHER.
I have found older pictures of Beryl and Deaun, and will use them later
on. We moved to a farm house owned by Mr. Thurer,4 [sic] miles
south of Tremonton, while there I built a home for Alford and Vera, on
a lot he had at Evans, He told me the material for the two room house
cost him $250.00 we couldent [sic] buy much for that now, while there I
built a 4 room home for my mother, on the same lot as Alford's house
was on, Norman went to School for two years at Tremonton.
We then moved to Brigham, where Norman went to School two years at the
Central School, While [sic] there Thelma Eths's [sic]
sister and my sister Nina would come stay, Etha took them down town one
evening to see if they could find a boy friend, I went to bed, they
came back home made so much noise out on our lawn this woke me up, I
went to see what was going on as I looked out,Etha [sic] decided to
come in the house, I jumped to get back in bed and fell over a chair in
the dark, just my luck.
We moved many times in the next few years, Built [sic] one meeting
house,7th. [sic] Ward, remodeled the 5th. Ward building, and buIlt
[sic] an addition on the Corinne Ward, This dident [sic] seem to bother
Etha, she was always ready to help.
I have a picture of Beryl,
taken when she was older, she was a good girl but always seemed to have
bad luck, always getting hurt., [sic] Etha took good care of the
children and kept a clean house, and helped in the Relief-Society, and
always made work fun to do. Took our car with some of the
sisters, with their faces blacked went around town singing songs, this
was just clean fun, and they seemed to enjoyed it all, Norman and I
built a 12 ft. boat went
on many fishing trips with Betty's parents that had a boat just like
ours, Norman and Betty went out fishing with her parents, Frank and
Beryl went out with us in our boat, we sure had fun, Deaun usely [sic]
had a girl friend
with her as this was before Reese and Deaun was married, A little later
I bought a larger boat, we went water skeing [sic] and more fishing,
Reese and Deaun bought our big boat and run the rapids on the Green or
Colorado river, which always scared me every time they went,All [sic]
our fishing trips were at yellow-Stone, [sic] was fun. I have a
picture of Deaun, taken when she was older, she was a very quiet girl
very thin , [sic] but she seemed to feel good and liked to have
all her girl friends at her home and they has fun, those days are are
[sic] all gone, and the girls all have large families now.
I built 4 new homes for us, and after living in each for a year or two,
we sold it and built another, finely ended up in the 4th, Ward, where I
am now.
Etha worked at the turkey plant before the War, she said
my check all went for coal, and [sic] kidding me said I dident [sic] get
a dress out of it, those times were hard, I know Etha and I went and
picked berried [sic] at Leggets when there was no lother work, but Etha
never complained, We [sic] run a paper rout from Willard through
B.R.City, [sic] Tremonton, Garland, back through Deweyville, Honeyville
back home, Etha was there to help every day.
Etha had a good business head on her, and when the Church took the
Garments [sic] out of the stores, Etha was asked to mannage [sic] the
business, she sold the Garments from our home, we used a back room for
the business, we had it here for a couple of years, then the Church
rented a store in town, which she run [sic] for about 8 years, the
managment [sic] from the Church office sister Reba 0 Aldaus, was very
pleased with the way the business was run, her store was set
Page-5-
MOTHER.
as a example as how sister Aldaus wanted the stores through out the Church to be run, Etha was very prompt in her reports, [sic]
Etha got our family organized as a family unit, where we did things as
a family, like all getting together doing our Genealogy one month, the
next month we had a party, the next month we went to the pagent [sic]
at Manti, next month
we probly [sic] had another work day on our records, and one we went
and rode the Heaber creaper [sic] and so on, we spent a year going to
the Salt Lake Genealogical library, where we gathered information and
found many of our kindred dead, and learned how to do research, which
will help us in our future research, I will always be greatful [sic]
for the time we spent there, some times just Norman and Betty and Etha
and I, and some times Kevin and Norine went, this was a wonderful time
we, spent together [sic]
Etha got cancer of the breast, Dr. Felt a local Doctor
treated her for Mastitus, for some time, Dr. Gilbert our Doctor came
home and when he looked at it he sent her to the McKay Dee Hospital and
Dr. George A Low operated on her, he told Norman and I,they [sic] have
let it go so long that it has spread to the point that I dont [sic]
know whether I got it all or not, I cant [sic] promise you anything,
Had Dr. Felt been on the ball things might of been different, We [sic]
went to the L.D.S.Hospital [sic] 4 times a week for 13 weeks and took
Kovolt and Leinar Exelator treatments, she was burned very deep, went
to the Ogden clenic [sic] through 1976 and 1977, was given 2 Brain
[sic] scans, sent to the St.Benedict, [sic] Hospital at Ogden for
tests, came home Dec. 22 had her xmas [sic] party and on Dec. 31
entered the BC.Hospital [sic] where she died Jan. 25th. 1978, I was
there fed her 3 meals each day, Norman and Betty came in the late
evenings, Beryl was here for 2 weeks, had to go back to Santa-Maria to
her work. The girls at the Bank where she banked, said we were
always glad to see her come in, she was so much fun to be with, she
left many many friends, her children Grandchildren and Great
Grandchildren will always remember her for what she really was, and
pray they will always be greatful [sic] for her, and pattern their
lives after her, She [sic] has gone to her maker, and great will be her
reward in Heaven , [sic] God bless the memory of a kind and loveing
[sic] wife and mother, Etha Jane Green John.
(Im sorry, [sic] but I have repeated myself in a place or two, please [sic] over look it)
