MEMORIES OF MOTHER

         -Deaun John Norr

Probably the first thing I remember about Mother is when we lived in
the basement house,She [sic] always tried to make life fun for us by
playing different games such as, rook, monopoly, putting puzzles
together, popping corn and making homemade candy, [sic] In the winter
she would put the candy in the snow so it would cool faster.

The washing was done with an old Maytag, [sic] In the winter when hung
it outside it would freeze, we would then bring it in and hang them
around the stove to thaw and dry.  We would really dampen them
down am iron them dry.  Mother would let me iron the pillow cases,
dish towels, tablecloths am hankeys. [sic] I could never iron them dry
so I think she had to do them over.

I use [sic] to go picking respberries [sic] with Mother down at
Leggetts, [sic] She would always put a few handfuls in my bucket, it
sure made it fill up fast.

The cooking was done for a long time on a coal stove, Mother was a very
good cook and we always had good food to eat, [sic] I don't know how
she found the time to do all the things she did.  I remember her
making butter, and [sic] rendering lard to make soap, [sic] Mother use
[sic] to fry grease cakes when she had bread dough, [sic] I've tried to
make them but they never turn out, [sic] She also use to steam bread
and we would have bread and gravy, [sic] I still really like it, but
it's something I could never get my family to eat. I liked coming home
front school in the fall when Mother was doing tomatoes or chili sauce,
it always smelled so good.

I really liked liked [sic] the chocolate cake Mother made for me on my
birthday, [sic] She was always doing nice things for me.  I never
remember her spanking me.  I must have been a good kid, [sic] I
always liked to go shoping [sic] with her because she bought such nice
things for me, and of course, we had lunch most of the time at Keeleys
[sic] We had Fish and Chips a lot, [sic] I guess we both liked
them.  If we had time we would go to a movie, sometimes even two.
I can remember a brown fuzzy coat she bought at Andersons one time,
[sic] I really liked it.

We use to ride the Bamburger (an old trolley car train) to Ogden am
once even to Salt Lake City, that was really something.  When
Norman was in the Navy I went with Mother, Betty Jean, Beryl and a
friend to see him in Astoria, Oregon.

While we were riding in the car my legs started aching and Mother rubbed them for me, it sure made them feel better.

I remember our trips to Yellowstone and how much she enjoyed going out in the boat fishing.
Mother did most of the washing for me after Reese and I were married
until Cynde was born.  She always sent food home with us, and did
roost of our canning, [sic] I never knew how much I didn't know until
we moved to Washington and I had to do things for myself.

Mother was with me when Cynde, Jan and Kerry were born, and I was
really glad, [sic] She gave me a lot of support.  But she was
always there when you needed her and seemed to know just what to do.

I think we will all remember the family dinners she had for us and the
good times we had together.  Christmas Eve was such a special
time, Especially [sic] the visit by Santa to all the children.
Those are the times we will never forget.  Not being able to be
home with our family at Christmas was the hardest thing after we moved
to Washington.

Mother has done so much for her children and grandchildren.  Not
just the things she gave us, but by her good example.  My children
are old enough to know and appreciate what a loving and good Mother and
Grandmother she was.
