Grand Canyon Trip 2006
Over the Labor Day weekend, we visited the Grand Canyon. The North Rim of the Grand Canyon is only a couple hours south of St. George, Utah. I initially imagined that the area would be mostly desert; however, there is a very large forest surrounding the North Rim area, and it was quite cool. Once you get to the edge of the canyon, the temperature seems to be a lot hotter.
We enjoyed walking through the old North Rim lodge which is built on the edge of the canyon and has an amazing view.
When back in St. George, we took a little trip to Snow Canyon State Park and also went water skiing at the Gunlock Reservoir which is about 1/2 hour from St. George.
As we looked at our map provided by the national park service, I noticed a small town on the south side of the Grand Canyon called Peach Springs. It is a town that is near the canyon and the old Route 66 runs through the town. When I-40 was built, the interstate didn’t follow Route 66 up into the Peach Springs town. It bypassed the town to the south. If you’ve seen the Disney movie Cars, you may find some similarities between Peach Springs and the town “Radiator Springs” depicted in the movie.
