Changing Windows File Rights

Problem: How to easily change file rights in Windows.

Solution: Use XCACLS.

With the xcacls.exe file which you should be able to find on your Windows disk, create a batch file with the following command:

C:\XCACLS.exe "C:\FolderorFileName" /C /T /E /G Users:C

Script Explanation:

  1. Name of the program XCACLS
  2. Name of the file/folder you wish to modify
  3. Switches:  /C – Continue even if the script encounters access errors
    1. /T – Change the current directory and sub directories
    2. /E – Edit the ACL instead of replacing the current ACL
    3. /G – Grant specified rights for a user/group
  4. The user or group that is being changed on the ACL and the rights being assigned.  The “C” means change rights.

Store your batch and xcacls file in the root of the C drive.  Double click your batch file, and you’re good to go.
